Meet the Founder, Nicole

Nicole Speeney, MS RDN LDN - Founder, Registered Dietitian

Welcome to Expedition Nutrition & Recovery! I’m SO glad you’re here.

My name is Nicole, and I am a Licensed Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. I was born and raised in Pennsylvania and currently live in North Carolina. I graduated from Colgate University with my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychological Sciences, and I also received my Master’s Degree in Nutrition Sciences from The University of Alabama at Birmingham, where I simultaneously completed my Coordinated Dietetic Internship Program. I am extremely passionate about helping those who struggle with disordered eating, active eating disorders, body dysmorphia, and I also have a soft spot for helping athletes as well!

My passion to pursue dietetics was catalyzed by my own experience with disordered eating while I was a captain on Colgate’s Division I softball team. I was under extreme amounts of stress and held many responsibilities, so (naturally) I never thought I was “sick enough” to reach out for help. Now, I can confidently look back and say that doing it all on my own was where I really went wrong - recovery would have progressed so much faster and more efficiently with professional support. I now aspire to be that person for others who might be navigating similar struggles - counseling as a professional, but also as a fellow human who GETS it and can speak from lived experience.

I have extensive experience in eating disorder care - I am a member of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals Foundation (IAEDP), as well as Eating Disorder Registered Dietitians and Professionals (EDRD Pro). I specialize in working with clients with complex feeding and eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), and other specified feeding or eating disorder (OSFED). I have completed advanced clinical training and continuing education in the treatment of eating disorders and practice in alignment with evidence-based standards. I have experience working in the outpatient mental health space as well, and am extremely passionate about striking the intersection between mental health and eating disorder care, and I deeply value multidisciplinary care. I have worked with athletes from the elementary age to the Division I level, I have spoken to teams, and at many different events and on different panels. I am a fierce advocate for my clients and believe that access to and coordination of care are key in providing the highest quality of care possible in the outpatient setting.

Navigating wellness in a world that praises toxic diet culture, overcomplicates everything, and spreads an overwhelming amount of misinformation is HARD to do alone. I love nothing more than demonstrating to my clients that there is a way to live your healthiest life beyond obsessing over food. I take a non-diet, weight-inclusive approach, and implement psychology-based mindset practices rooted in intuitive eating principles and nutrition science. I practice through a body neutral approach, and also love helping my clients find their source(s) of joyful movement! My knack for goal setting shows in my nutrition counseling, as I help to empower others to shift their rigid mindsets around food, body, and movement in order to embrace a balanced life BEYOND just food.
